Generated explanation

The illustration shows a three-step repair of an overlapping slate roof using a copper strip called a baby. First, the broken slate is removed; then a replacement slate is installed and attached with one nail at the indicated location, with a 1-inch placement dimension shown. A convex copper strip, illustrated as 2 inches wide and 6 inches long, is inserted into the joint between the overlying slates to divert water away from the new nail. An enlarged detail shows the concealed strip and specifies that its bottom edge extends 2 inches below the nail.
