Generated explanation

The illustration shows cutaway views of mat and raft foundations resting on soil. The mat foundation is depicted as a broad, flat concrete slab with locally thickened edges visible in section. The raft foundation has a broad concrete base connected to upright perimeter walls. An annotation identifies both as floating foundations made of strongly reinforced concrete to distribute support over weaker soils. No defects are depicted.
