Generated explanation

A perspective view of a gable-roofed house shows the ridge sagging between supported ends and the rafter ends bowing outward at midspan along the walls. Two cross sections illustrate remedial options based on ceiling-joist orientation. Where ceiling joists run parallel to the rafters, the illustration calls for properly securing their overlapping ends over the central support. Where ceiling joists run perpendicular to the rafters, the alternatives shown are adding a ridge beam or tying the bottom of the roof rafter back to several ceiling joists to transfer load.
