Containment of Fire Fire Gets Contained

Text in the illustration

people started to contain fire in "boxes" of stone or steel
they found that even though they couldn't "see" the fire they were still warmed by the walls of the box
smoke exits through hole in roof
radiant heat

Generated explanation

A schematic house section shows a wood fire contained between the walls of a box-like enclosure. Wavy arrows extend outward from the enclosure, illustrating radiant heat warming the occupied space and a seated person nearby. Smoke rises directly from the fire through the room and exits through an opening in the roof; no chimney or enclosed flue is shown. The annotations describe the historical use of stone or steel boxes to contain fire while allowing heat to radiate from their walls.
