Generated explanation

The illustration shows an automatic vent damper installed in the vent connector above a gas furnace. Two enlarged views show the damper plate in closed and open positions, operated by an external electric motor assembly. The damper closes as soon as the burners turn off to retain residual heat in the building and opens just before the burners come on. A note identifies open as the fail-safe damper position if the unit is not functioning properly.
