the only way to get hot water to a radiator in a gravity system is to have it above the boiler - this is why radiators in finished basement rooms are often high on the wall or at ceiling level

Generated explanation

A building cross section shows a gravity hot-water heating system serving an upper-floor radiator and a radiator mounted high in a finished basement room. Red supply piping and blue return piping, with directional arrows, show hot water flowing to the radiators and cooler water returning to the basement boiler. An expansion tank is connected above the upper floor. The basement radiator is highlighted with a dashed circle and is positioned above the boiler. The annotation explains that gravity circulation requires radiators to be above the boiler, accounting for high-wall or ceiling-level placement in finished basements.
