the catalytic combustor restricts airflow through the wood stove
to improve the draft for starting the fire, the bypass damper is opened until the fire becomes established
the bypass damper should also be opened before opening the firebox door to reduce the amount of smoke flowing out of the wood stove into the room

Generated explanation

A cross section of a catalytic wood stove shows burning logs in a lined firebox, a front combustion air intake, and a vent connector rising from the rear. The catalytic combustor is positioned beneath the vent outlet, while a bypass damper is located near the front of the upper firebox. Red arrows illustrate exhaust gases traveling through the open bypass route and into the vent connector. The annotations explain that the combustor restricts airflow and that opening the bypass improves draft during fire startup. They also advise opening the bypass before the firebox door to reduce smoke spilling into the room.
