Generated explanation

The illustration shows chimney-top dampers in open and closed positions above a brick chimney. A spring mechanism lifts the open damper lid above the flue opening, while the closed lid seats over the opening. A control cable extends down to the fireplace, where enlarged details show its positions at a mounting bracket for open and closed operation. An annotation specifies that the fail-safe position following a broken control cable should be open.
