Generated explanation

The illustration shows a small exterior roof-form diagram and a cross section through a mansard or gambrel roof assembly. The shallow upper roof encloses an attic above insulated ceiling joists, with soffit ventilation at the transition to the steep lower roof and roof vents near the ridge. Insulation continues down the vertical wall behind the steep lower roof section. An annotation states that the lower section of roof does not need to be ventilated.
