Generated explanation

Two sectional views show a compression faucet in its closed and open positions. In the upper view, the threaded spindle holds the stem washer against the valve seat, blocking flow from the supply pipe to the spout. In the lower view, the spindle and stem washer are raised, allowing water to pass through the valve seat and out the spout, as indicated by arrows. The handle operates the spindle, while the packing nut and packing washer surround the spindle at the top of the faucet body.
