Generated explanation

The illustration compares two brick-clad additions attached to existing two-story masonry houses. The preferred detail shows the addition brickwork toothed into the existing masonry, creating an interlocking junction along alternating brick courses. The less-than-ideal detail shows a straight vertical junction where the addition brickwork is not toothed in. An annotation directs inspectors to look for settlement cracks at this junction. Both additions have low, nearly flat roofs, windows, and exposed masonry foundations.
