Generated explanation

The illustration compares two fastening arrangements for overlapping wood bevel siding installed over sheathing and studs. Detail A places nails just above the undercourse, with a specified 1-inch overlap, so each board has one nail per nailing point; its enlarged inset identifies cupping and cracks as potential problems. Detail B places nails 1/2 inch above the bottom edge and through the overlapping boards, resulting in two nails per nailing point. Its inset shows shrinkage and cracking near a nail due to expansion and contraction. The drawing presents the competing problems of the two methods rather than identifying one as unconditionally correct.
