Generated explanation

The cutaway illustration shows a plaster ceiling supported by wood lath beneath ceiling joists. Intact plaster keys extend through the gaps between lath strips and hold the plaster in place along the adjacent ceiling areas. In the central area, broken keys have allowed the plaster to separate from the lath and sag downward, exposing the lath above. A note states that the sag is exaggerated for clarity.
