Generated explanation

A sectional drawing shows a sloped roof eave supported by a rafter above an exterior wall and ceiling joist. An ice dam at the roof edge traps water from melting snow upslope. Eave protection beneath the roof covering prevents this water from entering the roof space, with an arrow showing drainage down the edge. The protection is labeled as a minimum of 36 inches wide and extending at least 1 foot beyond the inner face of the exterior wall. A note distinguishes this water-entry protection from good attic insulation and ventilation, which help prevent ice dams.
