Generated explanation

The illustration shows a graduated slate roof on a house elevation with a chimney, eave trim, and two windows. The slate courses have staggered joints and progressively smaller exposed units toward the top of the roof. Upper slates are labeled as smaller and thinner, at 3/16 inch thick, while lower slates are larger and thicker, reaching 1-1/2 inches thick. The drawing explains the graduated arrangement rather than depicting a defect.
