Ribbons in Slate Slate Ribbons

Text in the illustration

preferable
cover ribbon with overlying shingle
slate ribbons should not be exposed
install slate with ribbon facing down

Generated explanation

The illustration shows overlapping courses of slate roofing with ribbon-like bands in individual slates. A green check identifies a ribbon covered by an overlying shingle as preferable. Another green check indicates installing slate with the ribbon facing down, illustrated by a dashed band. A red X marks a ribbon exposed on the weather-facing surface as improper.
