Generated explanation

The illustration shows side flashing at a brick chimney where it intersects a shingle roof, with a magnified detail and a separate flashing-piece diagram. Individual step or base flashings are interwoven with the shingle courses and turn up against the chimney. Counter flashing embedded in the chimney mortar covers the vertical legs of the step flashing. The annotations specify at least 1 inch of embedment into mortar, a minimum 3-inch lap over the step flashing, and a 3-inch overlap between adjacent counter-flashing sections. The separate diagram indicates 3-inch flashing legs, a 3-inch overlap, and a typical length of approximately 9 inches.
