Generated explanation

Two cross sections compare roof rafter and ceiling joist connections at solid masonry walls. In A, the ceiling joist and rafter bottom are at the same height, and the joist is attached directly to the rafter to help prevent spreading. In B, the masonry wall extends above the ceiling joist, with the rafter bearing at the top of this raised section. The upper masonry is shown tilting outward under horizontal rafter thrust, with dashed outlines and arrows indicating displacement and force.
