Generated explanation

The illustration shows a cave enclosure with an open wood fire on the floor and a hole in the roof above it. Smoke rises from the fire and exits through the roof opening, without a chimney. A person sits on a log beside the fire, while wavy arrows indicate radiant heat traveling from the fire and reflecting from the cave walls. The annotation explains that the roof opening improved smoke removal while retaining the benefits of radiant heating.
