if the thermocouple does not sense heat from the pilot, it will not allow the gas valve to send gas to the manifold (or pilot)

Generated explanation

The illustration shows parallel ribbon burners supplied by a common gas manifold, with flames along the burners. An enlarged detail shows the continuous pilot beside a thermocouple, with the pilot flame heating the thermocouple tip. Separate connections lead from the pilot and thermocouple toward the gas valve. Annotations explain that loss of pilot heat prevents the gas valve from supplying the manifold or pilot, and that the pilot button temporarily bypasses this safety function during lighting until the thermocouple warms up. Crossover igniters are explicitly omitted for clarity.
