Generated explanation

Two cross sections show an abandoned masonry chimney before and after removal of its upper portion. The original brick chimney passes through the ceiling and sloped roof, and its exposed upper section appears cracked and irregular. An arrow leads to the completed condition, where the chimney terminates in the attic just above the ceiling joists. The former roof opening is filled with roof supports and new sheathing, and new shingles complete the continuous roof slope.
