Generated explanation

The illustration shows a cross section through a masonry fireplace and chimney, with an ash dump leading to an ash pit in the foundation below. A cleanout door provides access to the ash pit from the basement side of the foundation wall. Wood wall framing is shown beside the foundation, with a floor joist above and a basement floor slab below. An enlarged detail identifies a minimum 6-inch clearance between the cleanout door and combustible framing both above and below the door. The title identifies insufficient clearance to combustibles as the improper condition being addressed.
