Generated explanation

The illustration shows a sectional view of a masonry fireplace and chimney, with a break separating the upper chimney from the fireplace assembly below. Dashed outlines and arrows identify creosote deposits along the chimney flue and around the smoke chamber above the firebox. The fireplace throat, damper, smoke chamber, and firebox are labeled, along with adjacent roof, ceiling, and floor framing. Annotations recommend checking from both ends of the chimney where possible and cleaning deposits thicker than 1/8 inch. Black, shiny creosote is identified as a greater concern than flaky, dark brown creosote.
