Generated explanation

The illustration shows a section through first-floor and basement wood-burning fireplaces connected to separate flues in a common chimney assembly. The basement fireplace flue offsets around the upper fireplace before continuing upward. Annotations identify inadequate combustion air, competition with other appliances, and basement negative pressure as contributors to poor draft. Additional factors identified are flue offsets, low temperatures at the firebox back wall, and chimney height and stack effect promoting downdrafts.
