Generated explanation

The illustration shows a cross section through a masonry chimney and metal wood-burning fireplace firebox, with an enlarged detail of the flue-to-firebox junction. A lintel supports the clay chimney flue independently of the metal firebox. A gap beneath the flue liner allows the firebox to expand without bearing against the liner. Flexible filler is indicated at the junction, and a 1/2-inch to 1-inch gap alongside the firebox is filled with noncombustible insulation. The larger section also shows the masonry surround, foundation support, and an adjacent floor joist.
