Generated explanation

The illustration shows a cross section through a coal-burning masonry fireplace and chimney. A coal insert, identified as typically cast iron, sits inside a shallow masonry firebox and has integral dampers and a removable face plate. Burning coal is shown in the lower portion of the insert, beneath the chimney passage. Annotations identify the chimney as typically unlined and usually lacking a smoke chamber or smoke shelf, and the masonry firebox as usually shallow and unlined. A shallow hearth extension projects over masonry support beside a wood floor joist.
