Air Conditioning – Bigger is not Better

Text in the illustration

9 tons
an air conditioner that is too large will:
cycle on and off more frequently - potentially causing premature compressor failure
cool the house too quickly - (satisfying the thermostat and shutting down) before the house can be sufficiently dehumidified

Generated explanation

The illustration shows a house connected to an oversized outdoor air-conditioning unit labeled "9 tons." The unit is drawn disproportionately large to emphasize excessive cooling capacity. The annotations explain that an oversized air conditioner cycles on and off more frequently, potentially causing premature compressor failure. They also explain that rapid cooling satisfies the thermostat and shuts the equipment down before the house is sufficiently dehumidified.

Components

outdoor air-conditioning unit air-conditioning connection lines house

Defects shown

Oversized air-conditioning equipment Frequent on-off cycling Potential premature compressor failure Insufficient dehumidification due to short cooling cycles
