Generated explanation

The illustration shows cross sections of two dug wells, one with an older stone casing and the other with a segmented concrete casing. Both have covers with access hatches and extend below the water table, with water occupying their lower portions. The ground is shown sloping away from the well openings, and a minimum 12-inch clearance is indicated between grade and the top of the concrete casing. The concrete well is labeled as 2 to 3 feet in diameter, with a usual depth of less than 30 feet. Its casing joints in the upper 8 feet are specified to be watertight.
