Generated explanation

Two simplified sectional views depict a full-bore ball valve in closed and open positions in a water supply pipe. In the closed view, the handle is perpendicular to the pipe and the ball blocks flow through the valve. In the open view, the handle is parallel to the pipe and the ball's bore aligns with the pipe, allowing water to flow through. A spindle connects the handle to the ball. The annotations identify applications at water mains and water heaters and explain that ball valves restrict flow less than other valve types.
