Generated explanation

Two sectional views show a gate valve in its fully closed and fully open positions on a horizontal water supply pipe. In the closed view, the gate extends across the pipe bore and blocks water flow. In the open view, the gate is raised into the valve body, leaving the full bore clear for flow. The handle operates a threaded spindle, with a packing nut and packing washer surrounding the stem above the body. Annotations identify use on mains and water heaters, specify fully open or fully closed operation, and warn that corrosion of the metal-to-metal seal can cause valve failure.
