Generated explanation

The cross section depicts a buried, two-compartment septic tank with an access cover above each compartment. Waste from the house enters the larger first compartment through an inlet dip pipe, which directs flow below the floating scum layer. Sludge collects at the bottom, with liquid effluent between the sludge and scum layers. An opening in the dividing wall allows effluent to flow into the second compartment, where scum and sludge layers are also shown. An outlet dip pipe draws liquid from below the scum layer and directs effluent toward the tile bed.
