The illustration shows a below-grade concrete seepage pit receiving effluent through an outlet pipe from a septic tank. A cutaway exposes gravel fill inside the pit and numerous openings in its walls. Arrows show effluent passing outward through the openings into the surrounding gravel. The pit is surrounded by a gravel envelope labeled as 2 feet thick, with topsoil covering the excavation at grade. A note states that some seepage pits have masonry or stone walls but function similarly.
