Generated explanation

A cross section shows an exterior basement stairwell descending to a basement door beside the house footing, with a perspective inset locating the walkout alongside the house. Rigid insulation extends beneath the stairwell, and an annotation calls for insulation up the sides and horizontally for about four feet around the stairwell to prevent frost heaving of the house footing. A drain at the bottom landing connects to piping leading toward the sewer, and the door has a specified four- to six-inch threshold. Railings protect the stairwell opening and stairs, while surrounding soil is directed to slope away to reduce water pressure on the side walls. An inspection callout directs attention to checking the stairwell wall for bowing or cracks; these defects are not actually illustrated.
