Generated explanation

A cross-section at a house foundation compares a short downspout outlet with a longer extension shown in dashed outline. The short outlet, marked with a red X, discharges into a depression in settled backfill beside the foundation wall. Arrows show runoff collecting at the wall, and blue droplets depict water penetrating into the basement. The longer extension, marked with a green check, directs water away from the house to a discharge point labeled 4 to 6 feet from the house. Wall and floor framing, the foundation wall and footing, and the basement floor are also shown.
