Generated explanation

The illustration shows a straight flight of closed-riser stairs beside a separate arrangement of open-riser treads. The closed-riser assembly identifies the tread, riser, nosing projection, vertical rise, and horizontal tread depth or run. Printed dimensions specify a typical 1-inch nosing, an 8-inch maximum rise, and minimum runs of 10 inches in the US and 8-1/4 inches in Canada. Tread thickness is shown as a minimum of 1 inch when supported by a riser and 1-1/2 inches when not supported by a riser. The open-riser arrangement also identifies a maximum 1-1/2-inch back-slope using horizontal dimension arrows between adjacent tread edges.
