Generated explanation

The illustration shows a plan view of a stair flight that changes direction through a series of tapered, curved-stair treads. The treads are narrower along the inside of the curve and wider along the outside. Dimension arrows indicate a minimum tread width of 6 inches at the narrowest point and an average tread width of at least 9 inches. Alternative regional criteria call for a minimum 9-inch tread width either at the stair centerline or at a line measured 12 inches from the narrow side of the stairs. Dashed lines and arrows identify the measurement locations.
