no ridge board is required if all the following are met:
-the rafters are directly opposed
-the ceiling joists effectively restrain the bottoms of the roof rafters
-the roof slope is at least 4 in 12 (or steeper)
-opposing rafters are secured with gusset plates

Generated explanation

The illustration shows wood roof framing with opposing rafters meeting at the ridge without a ridge board. Ceiling joists span between the walls and connect to the lower ends of the rafters, restraining them from spreading. The rafters bear on wall top plates supported by studs, and gusset plates secure the opposing rafters at the ridge. The annotations state that omitting the ridge board requires directly opposed rafters, effective restraint by ceiling joists, a roof slope of at least 4 in 12, and gusset plates securing opposing rafters.
