Electric Service – Wires Service Entrance – Wires

Text in the illustration

the primary purpose of the drip loop is to prevent water that runs down the service drop from getting into the service mast (and ultimately into the service panel)
the support wire for the two hot wires can also do double duty as the neutral connection for the house and is grounded back at the power pole

Generated explanation

The illustration shows an overhead electrical service drop connecting to a service mast on a house, with a magnified detail of the service cap and conductor connections. Service entrance conductors exit the cap and curve downward into drip loops before connecting to the service drop conductors at splices. Water droplets beneath the loops illustrate how water sheds below the cap rather than running into the mast and ultimately the service panel. An annotation explains that the support wire for the two hot wires can also serve as the house neutral and is grounded at the power pole. A meter is shown on the exterior wall beneath the mast.
